Will it be a \u201cconflict free diamond\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConflict diamond\u201d is a term used to describe diamonds tainted by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diamondfacts.org\/index.php%3Foption%3Dcom_content%26view%3Darticle%26id%3D128%26Itemid%3D134%26lang%3Den\">conflicts associated with diamond production in Africa<\/a>, where diamonds are mined under conditions akin to slavery, and are used to finance violent rebel groups.<\/p>\n<p>So diamond retailers have started offering \u201cconflict free diamonds\u201d to assure consumers that their diamonds have been, as one retailer puts it, \u201cethically sourced.\u201d In other words, a \u201cconflict free diamond\u201d has been mined, refined, and delivered, free of conflict. Its past is conflict-free.<\/p>\n<p>What about the diamond\u2019s future? Will it be \u201cconflict-free\u201d once it becomes a piece of jewelry worn by a happy wife or delighted daughter? A diamond is treasured, not only because of its value, but because of what it represents: beauty, timelessness, durability, permanence. It\u2019s the perfect symbol of a life-long relationship. Wouldn\u2019t it be neat if \u201cconflict free diamond\u201d represented a conflict-free relationship?<\/p>\n<p>Would that all diamonds were \u201cconflict free\u201d\u2014free of conflict in their production, and free of conflict in the relationships they represent.
