A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/us\/the-recent-tide-of-apologies-by-famous-men-has-been-%e2%80%98awful%e2%80%99-here%e2%80%99s-what-the-men-should-have-said\/ar-BBFr2xL?ocid=ientp\">Washington Post\u00a0article today<\/a> does a nice job of summarizing the good and the bad of the public apologies we\u2019ve been witnessing. The author, Allison Klein,\u00a0notes that many apologies miss the mark because they\u2019re still all about the offender, rather than the victim.<\/p>\n<p>This highlights the challenge of the public apology, which has two audiences: the victims themselves, and the offender\u2019s \u201cconstituency,\u201d be it their fans or the citizens they represent. In contrast, the private apology that most of us have occasion to make is simply between us and the person we\u2019ve offended. Studying public apologies gives us clues to how we can make our own apologies better \u2013 or worse.<\/p>\n<p>Another good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/11\/22\/565913664\/how-to-apologize-for-sexual-harassment-hint-it-takes-more-than-sorry\">piece on apologies<\/a> appeared today on National Public Radio. Interestingly, the author, Harriet Lerner, discourages asking for forgiveness. Her advice may be sound for public apologies, but for inter-personal apologies, asking for forgiveness is an indication that the speaker really desires reconciliation. It&#8217;s also a reminder to Christians of our obligation to forgive&#8211;eventually.
