{"id":159,"date":"2013-11-05T16:14:24","date_gmt":"2013-11-05T21:14:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/abfifer.com\/blog\/?p=159"},"modified":"2021-04-19T16:01:07","modified_gmt":"2021-04-19T20:01:07","slug":"peacemaking-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abfifer.com\/blog\/2013\/11\/peacemaking-court\/","title":{"rendered":"Peacemaking Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michigan is going to have a \u201cPeacemaking Court.\u201d Washtenaw County Circuit Judge Timothy Connors has received a grant from the Michigan Supreme Court to establish a Peacemaking Court in Ann Arbor. I\u2019m especially heartened that my colleague Susan Butterwick will be leading this innovative project\u2014she has the right experience and perspective to make it work well.<\/p>\n<p>The court will be modeled on Native American tribal court traditions, which value \u201cfour Rs: respect, responsibility, relationship and restoration.\u201d\u00a0There\u2019s apparently only one other such court in the U.S., in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.courtinnovation.org\/project\/peacemaking-program\">Brooklyn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While \u201cpeacemaking court\u201d sounds like an oxymoron, this concept is a move in the right direction. The adversarial system may be effective in ferreting out truth in some cases, but it can also destroy any possibility of reconciliation and restoration, thus causing a chain-reaction of ongoing conflict.
