{"id":42,"date":"2012-01-09T10:39:40","date_gmt":"2012-01-09T15:39:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/abfifer.com\/blog\/?p=42"},"modified":"2021-04-19T16:01:07","modified_gmt":"2021-04-19T20:01:07","slug":"apologies-in-the-practice-of-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abfifer.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/apologies-in-the-practice-of-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Apologies in the Practice of Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The ABA Journal recently posted a very good article on apology that encompasses all aspects of legal practice: <a title=\"The Last Word: When the Last Thing you Want to Do is the First Thing You Ought to do\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abajournal.com\/magazine\/article\/the_last_word_when_the_last_thing_you_want_to_do_is_the_first_thing\/\">The Last Word: When the Last Thing You Want to do is the First Thing You Ought to do.<\/a> Many articles have been written about apology as a component of mediated settlements, and I&#8217;ve given workshops on how to handle the apology in mediation. This article goes beyond apology in settlements: It talks about how we lawyers ought to incorporate apology into the way we inter-act with other lawyers, and with our clients. Like one of the lawyers interviewed in the article, I had to apologize to another attorney after leaving an angry message in his voicemailbox. I have also had to apologize to mediation parties when I&#8217;ve slipped up. It&#8217;s embarrassing, but it&#8217;s the right thing to do.<\/p>\n<p>It also honors God, so\u00a0Christians ought to lead the way on how to do this well. But in fact we&#8217;re not very good at this, so I appreciate the tools and encouragement from Peacemaker Ministries to help us make sincere\u00a0apologies\/confessions. A very helpful tool is the &#8220;<a title=\"Seven A's of Confession\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peacemaker.net\/site\/c.aqKFLTOBIpH\/b.958153\/k.7417\/Seven_As_of_Confession.htm\">Seven A&#8217;s of Confession.<\/a>&#8221; Bad apologies can actually make things worse, so the Seven A&#8217;s give me a better chance to make a sincere apology that will put things right.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The ABA Journal recently posted a very good article on apology that encompasses all aspects of legal practice: The Last Word: When the Last Thing You Want to do is the First Thing You Ought to do.
