So stories of people who publicly acknowledge being wrong are encouraging and instructive.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/voices\/2018\/11\/23\/christianity-kissed-dating-goodbye-relationships-sex-book-column\/2071273002\/\">Joshua Harris has acknowledged<\/a> that the popular book he wrote some twenty years ago, <em>I Kissed Dating Goodbye<\/em>, was not only na\u00efve but in some cases caused harm, and asked his publisher to cease publishing it. Harris realizes that he was \u201cyoung, certain, zealous and restlessly ambitious,\u201d when he discouraged Christians from dating, a view he now recognizes as not based on Scripture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Admitting that I was wrong hasn\u2019t been easy for me. I\u2019ve angered people who still like my book, and my efforts are understandably viewed as inadequate by the people who were hurt. But I\u2019m glad I set out on this journey because it\u2019s been a pathway of transformation for me, and I\u2019ve heard from others who have found healing in knowing they\u2019re not alone in reconsidering old ways of thinking\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Admitting I was wrong about the biggest accomplishment of my life has given me a greater willingness to admit that I don\u2019t have all the answers\u2026&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Harris\u00a0notes that critics are referring to\u00a0his current round of talks as an \u201capology tour.\u201d Should one apologize for promoting a particular viewpoint that one later regrets? Apology is appropriate when there has been an offense. But writing a book promoting a particular lifestyle is not in itself offensive. Readers are free to accept or reject the ideas in Mr. Harris\u2019s book, so if readers were harmed, perhaps it\u2019s because they put too much stock in Mr. Harris\u2019s ideas without evaluating those ideas for themselves. Perhaps it&#8217;s a matter of influence: Mr. Harris used his influence to promote a particular viewpoint that he now realizes was incorrect. Whether or not others were harmed, it&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/churchleaders.com\/pastors\/pastor-articles\/314664-joshua-harris-leader-courage-say-wrong.html\/2\">matter of integrity<\/a> now for him to correct that viewpoint.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Harris is to be admired for admitting publicly that he was \u201cwrong.\u201d That takes humility.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Peacemaking includes being able to admit being wrong.
